A nice marking out and welding project is the 50 mm steel Dice on a tube stand. The Local Plating Business said they would plate the finished items for free, so the boys have been learning about finishing to a high level.

This is the starting point before 6 grades of abrasive paper

A fun way to grab students attention when talking about Metals and their properties:
You definitely shouldn't mess around with mercury, but if you want a safe, similar, tactile experience, a metal called Gallium is widely available online. It's melting point is about 85 degrees, so with just a little heat, you can turn it from a solid, crystal-like state into a fun, reflective pile of goo. Here's a look at a few of it's properties and how it's used in the real world.

As a skills task I love creating high quality every day ideas in metal. Believe it or not the boys seem to enjoy the absurdity.
Here is an idea I have been pondering over for some time...a ridiculously over engineered project... like a Tape Dispenser. I have yet to create one in the school shop but brain storming ideas are coming thick and fast. here are some ideas to wet the apatite:

The most advanced Tap Dispenser in the World
